Professional Profile 

Ángel Llorente Hernández (Valladolid, Spain, 1955) graduated in Philosophy and Letters at the University of Valladolid, where he obtained the Degree with a dissertation about Equipo 57 y el Arte Normativo Español (1982).

He obtained a Ph.D in Geography and History (Art History) from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Arte e ideología en la España de la postguerra (1939-1951).

His thesis director was Antonio Bonet Correa. Antonio Elorza, Valeriano Bozal, Jaime Brihuega, Victor Nieto and Simón Marchan were the members of the jury that examined him. He was unanimously granted a “Cum Laude” distinction on December 11, 1991.

Professor of secondary school

He has taught at an arts and crafts school, as well as tourism. He has additionally worked as a training adviser teacher for a period of six years.

He has been an honorary collaborator in postgraduate studies at the Complutense University and associate and guest professor at the University Carlos III (Madrid). He has given lectures in the above mentioned universities and others including the International University Menéndez Pelayo, San Estanislao de Koska, University of the Basque Country and University of Castilla-La Mancha – as well as in several spanish museums. He has participated as a speaker in courses and congresses in Italy, Poland, Argentina and England. He was also codirector of the course “Art and Politics in Spain (1939-2000)” at the Summer University of El Escorial (Complutense University of Madrid).

He has comissioned several exhibitions from both individual artists (José Duarte, Puig Manera, Manolo Calvo, Jesús de la Sota and Bárbara López de Toledo amongst others) and collective groups, including Tránsitos, Artistas españoles antes y después de la guerra civil (in partnership with Jaime Brihuega in the Fundación Caja Madrid, in 1999) and Arte Normativo. 50 aniversari de la Primera exposició conjunta d’arte nortmatiu espanyol (in partnership with Pablo Ramírez, Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana, Alicante y Valencia, 2010-2011).

He is the author of the books Arte e ideología en el Franquismo (1936-1951) (Madrid, 1995) y Equipo 57(Córdoba, 2003) and joint author? of L’Art de la Victoria. Belles Artes i franquisme a Catalunya(Barcelona, 1996), Arte y política en España. 1898-1939 (Granada, 2002), La crítica de arte en España (1939-1976) (Madrid, 2004), Las técnicas artísticas en el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid, 2005), El ojo del huracán (Córdoba, 2008) y Retóricas del miedo. Imágenes de la guerra civil española (Madrid, 2011), among others.

He has written for numerous exhibition catalogues such as Arte para después de una guerra (Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, 1993), Equipo 57 (MNCARS, 1993), Ángel Ferrant (MNCARS y MNAC, 1999), Julio Romero de Torres. Símbolo, materias y obsesión (Córdoba, Fundación Rafael Botí, 2003), Ortega Muñoz (MEIAC, 2004), Equipo 57 (Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo y MEIAC, 2007), Los años intermedios. Artes español en la década de los 50 (Fundación Picasso, 2007) y Elena Asins. Fragmentos de la memoria (MNCARS, 2011). He’s published articles in various periodicals such as La Balsa de la Medusa, Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, Revista de Libros, Dez.eme, Archivos de la Filmoteca de Valencia y AenaArte.

He has formed part of a team working on the exile of Spanish artists in Latin America (Art and Exile project between Spain and Latin America (1939-1975). Caroline Foundation, FC 3/05). Together with Juan José Gómez Gutierrez he has co edited the culture magazine Cultura Moderna,  numbers Zero (Cultura y política, spring-summer 2004), One (Cultura y género, spring 2005) and Two (Cultura y violencia, autumn-winter 2006).

He currently works as an external participant for the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection Foundation, codirecting a training course for teachers and writing educational materials.

Main activities regarding art and culture

He commissions exhibitions on modern art, he is an expert speaker on artistic and cultural subjects and an organizer of meetings, debates and conferences on visual arts.
